NY State of Politics: NY-19: In Ad, Ryan Highlights Gun Control Push: Democratic congressional candidate Pat Ryan on Tuesday released his first TV ad of his campaign, highlighting his support for gun control. The spot also highlights his background as a veteran and his technology company. The Kingston native is competing for the Democratic nomination in the 19th congressional district in the Hudson Valley, vying to take on Republican incumbent John Faso, who is seeking a second term.
Morning Score: Ryan releases TV ad on gun violence in NY-19: Democrat Pat Ryan launched a TV ad in the Democratic primary to take on GOP Rep. John Faso, focusing on gun violence. “If our children are going up against this,” Ryan says, showing an assault rifle, “they should have the same protection we give our soldiers,” showing elementary school-aged children in helmets and bulletproof vests. “Or we could just get rid of assault rifles,” Ryan says.
Albany Times Union: Congressional candidate launches gun control ad: Democratic congressional hopeful Pat Ryan’s first television commercial calls for an assault weapons ban. He is vying for his party’s nomination to take on U.S. Rep. John Faso, a Kinderhook Republican, in a sprawling district that includes parts of Rensselaer County and all of Greene, Columbia and Schoharie counties.
Ryan, a veteran, is featured in the ad holding an AR-15 and says that those types of weapons are on the streets and schools of America. While arguing that children facing an assault weapon should have the same protections as solders, the advertisement shows students in military protective gear attending classes. “Or we could just get rid of assault rifles. What makes more sense to you,” Ryan asks.
The advertisement is a little reminiscent of a viral advertisement in 2016 from Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jason Kander, who is also a veteran. The advertisements both feature the candidates in an empty warehouse with an assault weapon. The ad from Kander features him putting the weapon together blindfolded as he advocates for background checks.
Faso has already been targeted by a gun control group led by former-Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
The Fray: Ryan campaign ad calls for assault rifle ban: Congressional candidate Pat Ryan has a new TV ad that begins airing today in which he invokes his background as an Iraq war veteran and uses jarring images of children donning military gear to call for a ban on assault rifles. Ryan… starts by mentioning his starting a business after his two tours of duty in Iraq to develop technology that would better protect American troops. “I’m Pat Ryan, and we were protecting them from weapons like this,” he says, holding a military-style rifle. “But these are on our streets, and in our schools, too.”
The commercial then flashes real footage of children being led in a procession with their hands on their heads, as they were after the school massacre in Parkland, Fla., in February. “If our children are going up against this, they should have the same protection we give our soldiers,” Ryan says, as the imagery switches to scenes of grim-looking children strapping on soldier’s helmets and ballistic vests, and descending school stairs in military gear. “Or we could just get rid of assault rifles. What makes more sense to you?”
